The long road traveled...

Josh Howard's first bodybuilding competition was in the Greater Knox Classic on Saturday, Aug. 11 2007 where he took 6th in the Teenage Class and 4th in the Novice Light Class. Since then, he has dedicated his life to bodybuilding. He writes...

Dreams?!... A lot of individuals never realize what dreams really are. A dream is a single effort or personal gratification and self-discipline.  A dream is not a fairy tale, a dream is not an illusion, a dream is real and very well possible to achieve with the proper dedication and sacrifice.

I was nine years of age when I first picked up a curl bar.  I was hooked right away.  I was young and didn’t really understand what I did it for, but just knew in my heart that this was it… this was my calling in life.  Over the next few years I still continued working out, blind to any knowledge of why, until one day I was in the magazine isle at a local grocery store.  I picked up a Flex Magazine and I saw Ronnie Coleman on the front cover.  I knew immediately what I wanted to look like in my future years.  Even though I knew the journey would be long and very tedious I never once questioned if I could do it.  I knew I could achieve my goals as long as I dedicated myself to it.  Years pass…

At 14 I joined my first gym.  I remember walking in and I felt at home, as if I had been there my whole life.  As I stood there in that moment seeing all these guys lifting heavy ass weight like it was nothing, I wondered how they did it.  Nevertheless, I was in aw at the shoes I was planning to try to fill one day.

Eight years later and ninety pounds heavier, those shoes aren’t so big but rather tight now.  I remember some of them encouraging me to chase my dreams and let nothing stop me and I want to say, “Thank You.” I also remember the ones that looked down on me and thought I would never make it.  You stuck your noses in the air as you walked by. I would like to say “Thank you even more.” For that you made me push myself even harder.  To you that read this I want you to know, no matter what your life has in store for you now, you can change that.  You can change your future, your destiny.  Your dreams will go as far as your imagination can take them.  It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you have in material objects, it doesn’t matter what people tell you you can and can’t do…… It is your life!  You make things happen regardless of what stands in your way.  Love your life, love your dreams. Because that is what matters in life, what we love and how hard we love it!  For that love will one day bring great things.

Think Positive,

Josh Howard
